Diabetes: The Silent But Serious Disease

By Dr. Vasant Shrivastava – MD (Medicine), Diabetologist

🌟 What is Diabetes?

Diabetes (also called Madhumeh in Hindi) is a metabolic disorder where either the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or cannot use it effectively. This leads to high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood, which can gradually damage various organs.

πŸ” Top Causes of Diabetes

  1. Genetics – Family history increases the risk.

  2. Unhealthy lifestyle – Fast food, sedentary habits, late-night sleep.

  3. Obesity – Especially abdominal (belly) fat.

  4. Stress and poor sleep

  5. Age factor – Risk increases after 40 years of age.

⚠️ Common Symptoms of Diabetes

Watch out for these early warning signs:
βœ… Frequent urination
βœ… Excessive thirst
βœ… Sudden weight loss
βœ… Constant fatigue
βœ… Blurred vision
βœ… Slow-healing wounds
βœ… Tingling or burning sensation in feet

πŸ’₯ Complications of Uncontrolled Diabetes

  1. Eye problems – Risk of diabetic retinopathy and even blindness.

  2. Kidney failure – Due to diabetic nephropathy.

  3. Heart diseases – Increased chances of heart attack and stroke.

  4. Nerve damage – Numbness, pain, or burning in limbs.

  5. Foot ulcers – May lead to amputation in severe cases.

πŸ›‘οΈ How to Prevent Diabetes?

βœ… Exercise daily – At least 30 minutes of walking or yoga.
βœ… Eat healthy – Low sugar, high fiber diet with green vegetables.
βœ… Maintain ideal weight
βœ… Manage stress – Through meditation and proper sleep.
βœ… Regular screening – Annual blood sugar (Fasting, HbA1c) tests after age 30.
